WHO: Scintilla + open WHEN: January WHERE: Forget-me-not dorms + various WHAT: Arrival + exploration catchall for January! WARNINGS: None, will mark in subject lines
[On the scale of weird situations Scintilla had found herself agreeing to, this ranked...about a four, she estimated. At lease she'd agreed to being thrown to another world before said throwing occurred, that was a new one. Beyond that the only really strange aspect was in how mundane the whole idea felt. Maintaining and revitalizing a world, sure--but that kind of thing usually came with a lot more punching things and a lot less...whatever this was.]
[Then again, maybe it wasn't too different from how dynamis was shaped by thought and sentiment. She'd rationalized out that far by the time she'd met the princess, smart enough to keep her mouth generally shut as per usual with meeting most leaders. Without anyone else to do the talking for her, she'd mostly just met the brief introduction with a smile and nod, wisely not questioning why she was requested for something wildly out of her wheelhouse.]
[But...in for a gil, in for a gallon. Pocketing the letter she'd been looking over again, Scintilla adjusted the odd-looking rapier at her hip and stepped out of her bedroom. She could be found wandering the dorm and castle grounds, often munching on a bread roll stolen from the dorm's kitchen. The stables caught her attention first, walking up and down the lines of stalls with a look that might have been taken for...confusion, or perhaps mild disappointment.]
[This was, naturally, immediately forgotten when she caught the sounds of a blacksmith's forge, all but rushing off to investigate. She'd be found there for the better part of her first few days on and off, either inspecting the whole process with fascination or peppering Emberlight's poor crafters with eager questions about their process.]
[...Eventually she'd remember there was some kind of job she was there to do, but priorities.]
[This is probably the weirdest thing you've seen so far, Scintilla. A girl giving you a weird, upset look. Distasteful, even, like she finds you offensive.
... or, if you look closely, it's not you. She's scrunching her nose up in distaste and annoyance at your sword.]
[She tilted her head slightly, ears turning in Yayoi's direction. Truthfully, it didn't look like much of a sword at all; more like a glorified walking stick worn as one.]
[ With the type of timing that would be a meet cute with CR slightly to the left, Ai is making her way up the stairs just as Scintilla makes her way down them. It's not a collision, but it's close. ]
Oh, sorry! I was just - [ a pause. Ai blinks at her before the recognition (or lack thereof, rather) clicks. ] Oh! Are you new here?
Not anymore, I guess? [ said with an awkward laugh. ] I still kind of feel like I'm only just settling in but I've been here... oh, wow, a few months now...
[ She looks kind of flummoxed to realize it herself - like the time has passed too fast and too slow all at once. But she gives her head a little shake as if to rattle the thought loose and rallies a bit. ]
Um, anyway...! Did you just arrive? Or did the attendants already give you the big tour and stuff?
It's kind of a lot up front, huh? It's extra weird for me since we don't really have, um. Any of this stuff back where I'm from. So I'm still kinda figuring things out. - ah, I'm Ai, by the way!
[ she is probably never going to remember a name like Scintilla but by god is she going to have to try and make the effort if they really are housemates now. ]
Have you had a chance to check out Rosavelle yet? Or just the castle?
[Cindy Moon is also hanging out around the forges, mostly because she'd commissioned a couple of things from the craftsmen there. Things like this were super duper outside of her wheelhouse, but she was interested. Spending time trapped in parallel dimensions with an evil version of herself that did this kind of thing had awakened at least a passing interest in learning.
Which is why she can't help but notice a repeat stranger. And, being the friendly, sociable Millennial that she is...opts to say hello.]
Aye, good bit like th' forge back home. Real difference, though-- [She folded her arms in thought, tilting her head in the direction of a few smiths working with Bloomcraft.]
Ain't never seen magic applied to ironwork quite that way before.
sorry for the delay, fighting a cold and getting ready for a con!
[Cindy peers over at the forge, then looks back to the stranger.]
Honestly I've only ever seen forges like this in movies. But it's really cool, and I think I'd like to learn some of the basics. But you're from a place where this kinda stuff is normal, then?
[Naturally, the stables were a common haunt for Yoojin. There wasn't much work for him to do there, and it wasn't exactly the same as his duties at the beast mount raising facilities, but the opportunity to say hi and give each horse a friendly pat was at least familiar.
What wasn't familiar was Scintilla. She wasn't the first new face Yoojin had seen, nor was a mi'qote the first non-human species he'd met, in Rosavelle or otherwise--but given the circumstances, it was enough for him to guess she wasn't a local. So!
Yoojin stepped back from a gray mare he'd been petting and cleared his throat.]
Hey there! I'm Han Yoojin, one of the other advisors here. Are you looking for something?
[Was it really a stupid question? Was anything a stupid question in another universe? Yoojin understood the need to fit in under other circumstances, but at least they were all fellow travelers here. No judgment.]
Don't think so, though I can't say I'm an expert on this world's fauna. What's a chocobo?
They're these big two-legged birds--most don't fly much, but they can run faster'n a coeurl an' for longer besides. Most'f Eorzea uses 'em for transportin' people n'cargo, you'd be hard pressed to find a horse about instead. Just seemed passin' odd for a second not seeing a stable full'a feathers.
[She offered a shrug, ear flicking as the mare snorted.]
[Scintilla might have seen this young woman in Forget-me-not's dorms earlier, but when she hits Emberlight Forge, there's a girl here working on... looks like a tiny bit of jewelry? She really doesn't look like she belongs here, though, pale skin, slender arms that seem to be having a hard time with the hammer and file, and occasional rookie mistake marking her as new to the art, even as she channels Imprintwork into the charm she's working on, slowly but surely.
Still, she's working hard... and perceptive enough to notice someone watching her out of the corner of her eye.]
Hey, I don't bite, you know. I don't even get mad for questions, most of the time. You just watching, or you have an idea what's going on here?
Oughta think I know my way 'round a forge real well, most'f the time.
[She approached in a few quick steps--not too close, a crafter respecting another's workspace--and looked over Ena's shoulder, ears swiveling forward attentively.]
But I ain't seen this kinda use 'f magic in smithin' before. How's it work?
That makes one of us. I'm... learning, slowly. But I haven't been doing this very long, so there's a reason for that.
[But she is learning, which is progress.]
Imprintwork enchants items you give to people, or that have special meaning... or just that you want to do something either small and sometimes, or big-ish and once. Like, I've got a charm on my bracelet that I made during a workshop last month- [she holds up her wrist to show her charm bracelet, containing two rough charms of a strange symbol and a paintbrush, those and the bracelet itself-] that helps keep my hands warm, since I can't get disposable hand warmers here and painting would be miserable without them.
[Ena shrugs, turning back to what... with that context is probably another charm for her bracelet?]
Actually using it... well, the better you are at the smithing, the less multitasking you'll have to do. I'm still learning smithing and Bloomcraft, so it takes me a lot of work to get a piece I'm happy with. Magic doesn't help me craft better, it just makes my finished product do something else when I'm done with it - if the craft and the magic come out right.
Mm...magic in objects, basically--bit like materia or augmentation, that. Easy 'nuff to understand, but ain't the most common practice back at home. Done it an' seen it done myself a good number'f times, though.
[She leaned over slightly, half-reaching for the hand holding Ena's file.]
Your grip's just a lil' off. Gotta be firm, but not too rigid or y'might break what you're filin'. D'you mind if I move your hand a bit?
[The blacksmiths of Emberlight are truly masters of their craft, weaving in the magic of the Everbloom between strikes of the hammer.
And then, there's the pink-haired girl in the back, amateurishly hammering at the components to some bizarre contraption. It bends in a way that even someone who doesn't know what it's actually for can tell isn't on purpose, eliciting a groan from March. She flops on her b-]
Wait! Nope! Forge safety! Day one lesson! Good catch!
[-catches her balance and flops against the wall instead.]
