Event: The Wilting Festival

PREPARATION
It's been a long month of settling in (for all of you) and hard work (for… some of you), and while Nadeshiko has done her level best to mold everyone into something resembling presentable nobility, even she must finally concede that the time has come for your first official venture down into Rosavelle proper. (She says, while giving certain individuals a very pointed look. You know who you are.)

Despite Nadeshiko's, um. Exacting standards, the castle tailors have prepared attire that is on the surprisingly casual side - soft, cozy layers in dusky pastels and warm creams, trimmed with embroidered blossoms and lined with plush fabrics. Nadeshiko insists it is all "strategically understated," whatever that means.

Once everyone has bundled themselves accordingly, attendants guide you across the Castle Grounds toward the waterway that links the castle to Rosavelle. Moored along the stone steps are several slender boats, each polished to a mirror shine and waiting waiting at the landing, dressed just as warmly as the rest of you, is Callie.

They're coming along on this excursion too, they announce - which makes you sort of wonder how exactly they're going to blend in…? They offer no explanation for this, merely smiling with the serene confidence of someone who absolutely knows what they're doing. You hope.

Callie clears their throat once everyone has gathered. "Before we set off," they begin, "I want to thank you all for your efforts this past month. I know it hasn't been easy. This trip is a test - Nadeshiko insists I remind you - but I hope you'll spend these next few days discovering what makes this kingdom so dear to me. I hope you fall in love with it, even just a little."

And with that, attendants gesture everyone aboard. The boats push off from the landing, gliding down the canal toward the vibrant city beyond. Ahead, you can hear the distant sounds of music, laughter, and the unmistakable bustle of festival preparations drifting across the water.

Rosavelle awaits!
THE WILTING FESTIVAL

The boats drift smoothly along the canal, the castle receding behind you as the waterways widen and the distant hum of the city grows louder. Soon, the canal bends - and bursts open into a riot of color and sound.

Nadeshiko rises from her seat just enough to hold out a hand as if presenting the kingdom to everyone. "Welcome," she announces, "to Rosavelle. Do try not to gawk. …Or at least, do it discreetly."

Gawking, however, feels almost unavoidable. Bridges arch over the waterway, draped with trailing garlands enchanted to glow in shifting hues. Bloomcraft lanterns hover in clusters, bobbing gently overhead like luminous petals caught in an intangible breeze. The buildings lining the canals are painted in cheerful colors, their balconies overflowing with winter-hardy blossoms charmed to shimmer with faint starlight. Everywhere you turn, there are stalls and floating market boats laden with food: sugared fruit skewers, steaming seafood pies, warm spiced drinks, flower-shaped pastries dusted with edible glitter.
Music drifts from every corner - bright string melodies, lively flutes, the rhythmic clapping of dancers gathered in impromptu circles. Children dart between vendors, adults laugh over shared drinks and the whole district feels like it's pulsing with festival magic.

"The Wilting Festival," Callie explains from their spot near the bow of the lead boat, "is how we honor the year behind us - and give our sleeping flowers enough joy and energy to bloom again once the seasons turn." Their eyes shine with unmistakable fondness. "So the more fun you have, the better for Rosavelle."

"Within reason," Nadeshiko adds very sharply.

The boats glide toward a decorated landing and attendants help everyone disembark. Callie continues, "The festival runs nearly nonstop for two days. If at any point you need a break - or if Nadeshiko feels compelled to… re-straighten your etiquette - the boats will take you back to the castle at any hour."

Nadeshiko folds her hands neatly. "Yes. I will, in fact, be checking."

And then your escorts step aside and you're officially let loose! There’s all sorts to do in almost every corner you can find around the kingdom and players are encouraged to have fun and come up with festival acitivies of their own for their characters to enjoy. But if you need some ideas to get you started, here's what you can find going on around Rosavelle!
❆ The Lantern Cascade Parade happens twice daily. Rowboats decorated in glowing flowers drift down the canal, musicians playing as children toss enchanted petals that float upward instead of falling. Advisors are welcome to ride along if they help row.

❆ Food and drinks galore! Try snow sugar fritters, savory herb pasties, candied citrus peel, roasted chestnuts, and flower-shaped steamed buns filled with spiced cream. There's also the "Wilting Platter Challenge," which involves finishing a sampler of six festival specialties before the enchanted hourglass runs out. Stalls also offer mulled wine, spiced berry cider, rosehip toddy, and frothy lavender cocoa. For the brave (or foolish), certain taverns host informal drinking contests.

❆ Musicians from across Rosavelle gather all over the festival, providing a constant stream of lively fiddles, soft waltzes, upbeat folk songs, and the occasional heartfelt ballad. Citizens often pull strangers into spontaneous dance circles - consider it part of blending in. Of course, if you've already got a partner, then you have an excuse to politely decline…

❆ Horse-drawn carriage rides wind through the district's canalside streets. Each small carriage takes two passengers with no option to solo ride, making it a cozy (or awkward) experience depending on your company. The horses wear garlands woven from winter blooms, and the drivers love pointing out bits of Rosavellan lore along the route, which makes it a good way to learn about the kingdom, at least.

❆ A wide plaza near the center of Menthward has been converted into a Bloomcraft-frozen skating rink. Teams of mages keep the ice perfectly smooth, and skates can be borrowed for free. While it's all just intended for good fun for the most part, every other hour sees exhibitions by local skaters from the Marquess Lyric Academy.

❆ A row of artisans offers winter charm-making workshops. You can weave winter blossom bracelets, assemble protective charms, or paint tiny glass lanterns with personalized colors. They're said to help carry warmth into Fallow. In addition, a stretch of the riverside is devoted to paper lanter painting, where guests decorate small floating lanterns with wishes for the coming months. At sunset each day, they're released out into the canal.

❆ The "Wilting Games" are a set of friendly competitions held throughout Menthward: snowball toss accuracy challenges, team relay races with sleds enchanted to glide on cobblestones, flower-identification quizzes hosted by excitable botanists, and a particularly silly scarf-tying speed contest.

❆ A number of cafes have dedicated themselves to being ‘quiet spaces' for locals to duck into if they need to take a little break from the noise and activity of the festival. Ideal for recharging or hiding from Nadeshiko for exactly ten minutes before she inevitably finds you.

THE FINALE
By the end of the second day, Menthward glows with the contented warmth of a celebration that has wrung every last drop of energy from its participants. Festivalgoers - locals and advisors alike - gather in the largest plaza for the final event of the Wilting Festival.

As the crowd settles, the first firework bursts overhead in a cascade of rose-gold petals, scattering sparks that drift like falling blossoms before dissolving into the night. More follow: spirals of blue and silver, twin bursts that curl into heart-shapes, a shimmering waterfall of white light that earns a collective gasp from the crowd. Bloomcraft enchants every explosion to swirl, bloom, and dance in impossible patterns.

The finale erupts in a storm of gold and crimson, lighting the plaza like daylight. When the final burst fades and the echo rolls away across the city, the crowd breaks into applause so loud it rattles the garlands overhead. Just like that - the Wilting Festival comes to a close.

Callie and Nadeshiko gather the advisors once the crowd begins to disperse. Callie looks like they’ve had a whale of a time, practically glowing with pride and Nadeshiko… well. She doesn't look more displeased than usual.

The group makes its way back to the docks, where the boats await with lanterns softly flickering. Once everyone is aboard, they push off from the city's edge, gliding through dark, glass-still waters back toward the castle. After all of that, how well did you really do? Did you blend in? Impress? Make a fool of yourself?

The answer will come soon enough.

For now, all you can do is rest - and wait for the results of your test.

[Yayoi's been put in something properly understated... surprisingly well, even. Rather than her normal outfit, she's been given a properly normal cute outfit, though she is keeping her coat from home over it, no matter how badly it clashes.]

i. the early stage

[No gawking? Impossible. Yayoi's looking around in awe and wonder, and... honestly, this is the happiest she's seemed since she arrived. She's always enjoyed festivals, after all, and she's excited to check it all out.

Though, she's rather confused at first by the lack of games and festival stalls, she's starting to understand it. She's walking around with a handful of basically every kind of festival food she could get her hands on. And as for the other events? She's weaving a little charm, or handling the snowball-throwing accuracy event with the skill of a kid who spent all her time trying to beat those ball-throwing festival stalls. She's having a great time.]

ii. the finale

[what happened between the start and the end? Don't worry about it. But now, Yayoi is watching the fireworks... they're pretty, but she doesn't seem to be having a great time with them. She's trying to keep positive, but it's pretty obvious her good mood from before is... struggling here at the end. What could possibly be wrong-

Oh, no, there it is. She's covering her ears as she tries to keep watching. It's just too loud.]

iii. other

[plot with me on discord or on plurk at [plurk.com profile] lastbastion for anything else! there's a Clusterfuck occurring so trying to make things specific may be hard.]

So would it be impolite or imprudent to keep a sidearm on you during the festival? Asking for a professionally paranoid friend.

[Blue beret. Warm scarf in warm gold and cream colors. Dark blue turtleneck, black trousers, and a warm charcoal long jacket. Alesha’s dressed for snow and chill, but no less dressed up for this.]

1: arrival
[From the situation and the castle grounds, Alesha was expecting Renaissance splendor - something like a Caelibyrni or Gallente or maybe HLE city street fair with imported Yao fireworks.

She was not expecting this.

Alesha is very good at tanking awe as much as dragonsbreath, but she cannot help but gawk just a little at the bloomcraft on display.]

So much magic used for fun, [she says in a voice smaller than she’s used to, a smile slowly spreading across her face.]

2: festivities
[How shall she have fun here? Let me count the ways:

2A: There’s the food, of course. Those lovely flaky pastries. Eel pie, a favorite from Caelibyrni taverns. Candied chestnuts that make her nostalgic of her real home on Earth, though what doesn’t? And the lavender in the hot chocolate is a surprise, but not an unpleasant one.

Because Alesha is who she is, she’ll start recommending things to uncertain seeming folk she recognizes from the ship, offering to share samples. Will you break bread with her?]

2b: [And then there’s the music - so much wonderful, amateur music. She finds herself wanting to contribute.

So, when she can, where it’s appropriate, she sings.

Join her? Listen?]

2c: [As for the competitions, Alesha is game for pitching snowballs - and for using her holy sunlight to take the chill off, which Aurora would approve of, Leesh is sure - and the silly scarf tying contest. Have you seen a grown woman giggle in delight? You will.]

3: tavern
[After a while, she does need to duck into the cafes to collect herself. And most of the time, ten minutes with a book and a cup of cocoa will do it for her, and she’ll welcome well behaved company. But if she sees someone in distress - or trying to start shit - Alesha will sigh, finish her drink, and try to intervene; she can’t help herself.]

4: wildcard
[Or do a secret fourth thing! Contact me at taliaellib on Discord or on Plurk at [plurk.com profile] therealbliss to hash out the details.]

I, food

[personal profile] gal_paladin 2025-11-30 03:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Any recommendations?

[This particular elegant lady appears to have a hand pie and a bag of roasted chestnuts herself.]

Eel pie is something I didn’t think I’d find nostalgic, but I do, and three stalls south on the west side they make a good one.

[Hmm... well, this lady seems all fantasy-like, so she's probably a local...]

No idea, I'm still new here, but... There's these beef bun things nearby? "Pastas"? [pasties.] They're good.

[Although the festival's proven to be more... exciting (and exhausting) than Yoojin anticipated, he's still doing worlds better than when Yayoi first encountered him crumpled on the greenhouse floor. It's as a human being, then, and not a furious sack of bruises and fried nerves that he notices, as he always does, a young person in distress.

To tell the truth, he'd bought these as a souvenir gift to bring home, but...]

Yayoi! Here, try these.

[He ducks into her field of vision and waves, trying to get her attention between booms, and then offers her a pair of fluffy, conical... somethings that just materialize across his palm. Grinning, he explains:]

They're earmuffs! They should help a little with the noise.

[lol. lmao even. Alesha’s basic respect for local customs wins again, if this obvious Adventurer-type thinks she’s a local]

Beef patties? [As in, Jamacian ones. To be fair that’s probably derived from “pastie”] That does sound good. How’s the spice level? Heat, I mean.

Alesha, by the way.

[Rather than a handshake, with full hands, she does a shallow bow. And keeps a safe and respectful 2-meter distance, for that matter.]

It's fresh, so still hot that way, but not that spicy...

[At least, Yayoi could handle it. She bows back.]

Yayoi Tenju. I'm, um, with the Princess. So, I'm new here.

[personal profile] nightwild 2025-11-30 03:56 pm (UTC)(link)
[... well, she's no stranger to pulling things out of nowhere, so she just takes them gratefully and immediately puts them on.]

They look like fox ears...

[she seems. remarkably happy about that, for some reason.]

Relax, so am I. I’m just used to doing as the Romans do in Rome. Who says you don’t learn anything from roleplaying games?

[…you’re lucky this makes sense given your everything because that fourth wall looks mighty wobbly.]

Might have been here longer than I have, come to that.
gal_paladin: (always happy to help)

I was thinking more Sord by that but she’s honestly relieved to leave it at home lmao.

Huh? Oh...

[pictured: a girl who doesn't know what roleplaying games are, but is scared to ask.]

I guess. I didn't see you around before, either, so I assumed...

[personal profile] gal_paladin 2025-11-30 04:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I’ll take it as a compliment. A pleasure, Yayoi.

[She’ll offer one of her candied chestnuts. And have one herself, for that matter.]

How has castle life been treating you?

It's freaking weird.

[She rearranges her load to take the chestnut, and CHOMP. It's... a little sweet, but that's fine!]

I'm not used to this fancy stuff. I don't get any of this social manners stuff.
gal_paladin: (heck yeah)

[personal profile] gal_paladin 2025-11-30 04:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Used to a more rough and tumble life?

[Unfortunately her social worker senses may be tingling.]

Courtly manners are… a lot to keep up with. You’re not wrong. A lot is intricacy for its own sake.
nightwild: (pic#15781424)

[personal profile] nightwild 2025-11-30 04:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Pretty much. I'd take a street brawl over having to mind that crap any day.
gal_paladin: (resting resolute face)

[personal profile] gal_paladin 2025-11-30 04:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Just as long as you don’t start one, I think Nadeshiko will call it a win.

[Not an accusation, just a thought. She takes another bite of her pie.]

Where are you bunking? Hanging my sword in Geranium myself.

[personal profile] nightwild 2025-11-30 04:20 pm (UTC)(link)
"Lily"... I guess? I don't really get the whole, flower, everything. I'm not used to this many flowers at all, still. I'm more used to the city.

[personal profile] gal_paladin 2025-11-30 04:40 pm (UTC)(link)
More used to steel and concrete than cozy cottages and cobblestones?

[A beat, and a sigh. Then:]

I miss it too. The skyscrapers and asphalt of home. Miss computers and games with friends.

This isn’t my first time offworld but at least this time I was invited, rather than… taken.
nightwild: (pic#15423540)

[personal profile] nightwild 2025-11-30 04:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Miss it...?

[Huh. Is that what she feels? It's not what she's used to, here, but... does she miss it?

She misses the food, definitely. Her new job, yeah. But... Tokyo itself? She's so busy thinking she manages to completely miss Alesha's quiet aside.]

Huh? Oh, I never did computers. I don't know anything about them. Or games, for that matter...
gal_paladin: (lions must be forged not born)

[personal profile] gal_paladin 2025-11-30 05:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Less important than the folk I used ‘em to talk to, the folks I played with. None of them here.

I’m sure you understand.

…that said I wonder if a game would go over well at the castle. Something to consider after the festival.
nightwild: (pic#17451848)

[personal profile] nightwild 2025-11-30 05:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh... you're alone here, too? Sorry to hear it.

[She is. So awkward, but.]

If it's a ball game, I'd probably be good at it.
goldship: (163)

[personal profile] goldship 2025-11-30 05:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Sigh.

The horses. How much wrath of Nadeshiko will be incurred if someone tries to challenge the horses to a carriage pulling competition and or race?
